Hospice of Lansing & Stoneleigh Residence receives Walmart Foundation Grant to Help Provide Care for Terminally Ill
Hospice of Lansing & Stoneleigh Residence received a $40,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to assist low-income, uninsured and/or underinsured patients access to hospice care services and Stoneleigh Residence. Specifically, this grant will positively impact the local community and patients who are terminally ill by giving them access to high quality, 24-hour end of life care, regardless of their ability to pay through the assistance of the Helping Hands Charitable and Subsidized Hospice Care Program.
“With this amazing grant, we are able to provide care at Stoneleigh Residence for patients who otherwise would not have access,” said John Person, Executive Director at Hospice of Lansing & Stoneleigh Residence. “As research shows, living on a bare-minimum/poverty level budget does not allow for any savings, leaving a household vulnerable to unexpected expenses. When unexpected expenses arise, families are then forced to make difficult choices and take unnecessary risks. Now with this grant and our assistance, a family’s focus can be on the loved one in need without sacrificing their own welfare.”
Hospice of Lansing started taking care of patients in 1979, before there was any insurance reimbursement for hospice care. Its founders were a group of dedicated doctors, nurses and community volunteers who began providing care to the dying on their own time. In 1993, Ionia Area Hospice merged with Hospice of Lansing. Ionia Area Hospice retains its own identity.
In 2001, the community came together in support of a capital campaign to build our eight-bed inpatient unit: Stoneleigh Residence. Hospice of Lansing and Ionia Area Hospice serve a 10-county area and provide care in private homes, facilities and at Stoneleigh Residence. They are true community-based hospices; created out of necessity and driven by our mission to serve all regardless of the ability to pay. The Hospice of Lansing family provides pain management and personal care, respite care, emotional and spiritual support, volunteer support and grief support after the loss.
“We are thankful that organizations like Hospice of Lansing & Stoneleigh Residence are here for mid-Michigan patients and their families in times of great need,” said Jim Winkler, Walmart Regional General Manager. “Through this donation, we are honored to support these families during such an important time.”
