What I Need To Know 1

Home vs. Hospice of Lansing's Stoneleigh Residence

Many people want to remain in their home at end-of-life. Staying home is possible with the support of family, friends and hospice team. Most are able to remain home and pass peacefully in their home environment. There are times that support of family and friends is not possible or the level of care needed exceeds what family can provide. The hospice team only visits intermittently, because hospice is not a 24/7 service.  In those cases an alternative is needed.

Hiring private care.  You can hire trained home health aides through an agency, known as “private duty” care, to assist with care and home chores. This can help a person remain home and bring peace of mind. It may require up to 24 hours per day in some cases. Hospice does not cover the cost of “private duty” care, we can provide hospice aide services multiple times a week depending upon the patient’s need.

Moving to Stoneleigh Residence. You can move to our hospice home called Stoneleigh Residence. A move to Stoneleigh Residence can provide peace of mind to the patient and also their loved ones. It allows the loved one to transition from caregiver back to family member, letting the specially trained staff at Stoneleigh Residence provide the 24/7 care needed. Stoneleigh Residence has specially trained Nurses, Physicians, Hospice Aides, Social Workers, a Music Therapist, a Massage Therapist, a Chaplain and Volunteers all available to our patients. The grounds at Stoneleigh Residence are also very special with 20 acres of woodlands with a pond and various wildlife. Previous patients and families have related the views to their own home and expressed the peace and tranquility the grounds have brought them.

One final difference between home hospice vs. Stoneleigh Residence is that there is a cost to stay at a licensed hospice home. Medicare, Medicaid and private insurances cover the medical portion of hospice care.  There is a fee to residents for room and board. Most pay this privately, however, some insurances do cover this fee and we can help you determine your need. Hospice of Lansing and our affiliate Ionia Area Hospice are charitable organizations. In case of need, our hospice services may be provided without regard to one’s ability to pay. We rely on donations to cover these costs.

How do I pay for hospice?

Hospice in the home is covered 100% by Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurances. Hospice care in the home includes staff visits, to wherever home is, medications directly related to the hospice diagnosis, medical equipment (hospital bed, side table, wheelchair, oxygen etc…) and care supplies (briefs, pads, gloves etc…). Hospice of Lansing always runs an insurance check before proceeding with services. Once an initial assessment is made and hospice care is deemed appropriate, our staff will visit you at home. Give us a call and start the conversation.

Who do I call?

Hospice of Lansing has staff dedicated to taking your phone call and answering all of your questions. We can explain what hospice is, whether your loved one qualifies and how hospice can be a support. We are here for you. You will not go through this alone. Contacting us is easy, just call.

Does your loved one live outside the Lansing Area?

The choice for hospice care becomes even more difficult when searching for care providers for an out-of-town family member. If you’re not from the area where care will be provided, it’s hard to know who to contact. That’s why Hospice of Lansing has joined the National Partnership for Hospice Innovation (NPHI), a national referral network of 70+ not-for-profit providers, under the umbrella of the National Partnership for Hospice Innovation (NPHI). Dialing 1-844-GET-NPHI (1-844-438-6744), will put you in touch with the not-for-profit provider closest to their loved one.

Who will come to my home? How often will I be visited?

Our hospice team includes specialists who come to you as experts in pain management and symptom control at the end of life. Staff visits are intermittently done throughout the course of the week and our on-call nurse is always available. The only required visit is from your hospice nurse, and you should know that you have a choice with who visits and which services you chose to take advantage of. You may see one or more of the following throughout the week.
